چکیده

In goal-directed proofs, such as those used in HOL, tactics often must operate on one or more speciic assumptions. But goals often have many assumptions. Currently there is no good way to select or denote assumptions in HOL88. Most mechanisms are sensitive to inconsequential changes or are diicult to use. Denoting assumptions by lters (matching) makes it easier to maintain large proofs and reuse pieces. But writing the lter predicate can be time-consuming and distracting. We describe an aid to proof building which synthesizes lter functions from terms. Given examples of terms which should and should not be matched, the function creates an ML predicate which can be used, for example, with filter or FILTER_ASM_REWRITE_TAC. This paper reviews past discussions on denotation methods, the design and implementation of the lter synthesizer, applicable AI classiication techniques, and possible application to more general term handling and recognition.

Nominal Semantics for Predicate Logic: Algebras, Substitution, Quantifiers, and Limits

We define a model of predicate logic in which every term and predicate, open or closed, has an absolute denotation independently of a valuation of the variables. For each variable a, the domain of the model contains an element JaK which is the denotation of the term a (which is also a variable symbol). Similarly, the algebra interpreting predicates in the model directly interprets open predicat...

Binding Logic: Proofs and Models

We define an extension of predicate logic, called Binding Logic, where variables can be bound in terms and in propositions. We introduce a notion of model for this logic and prove a soundness and completeness theorem for it. This theorem is obtained by encoding this logic back into predicate logic and using the classical soundness and completeness theorem there. In predicate logic, only a quant...

A CPS-Transform of Constructive Classical Logic

We show that the cut-elimination for LKT, as presented in Danos et al.(1993), simulates the normalization for classical natural deduction(CND). Particularly, the denotation for CND inherits the one for LKT. Moreover the transform from CND proof (i.e., Parigot's -term) to LKT proof can be considered as a classical extension to call-by-name (CBN) CPS-transform.

Tarskian Semantics, or No Notation Without Denotation!

Tarskian semantics is called "Tarskian" for historical reasons (Tarski, 1936). A more descriptive name would be "systematic denotational semantics," or SD for short. The method is called "denotational" because it specified the meanings of a notation in terms of what its expressions denote. The method is called "systematic" in hopes that the rules that assign meaning are precise enough to suppor...

Denotation by Sense and Reference

The notion of reference as entailment in the common ground provides a uniied framework for the treatment of denotation by names, deenite descriptions, and pronouns, including anaphors. Within this framework, semantic and pragmatic considerations are combined, giving two kinds of proof of denotation, by sense and by reference, for references to individuals which are and aren't already in the com...
